Sound Bites

Biography
I first heard Greta in 1995 at "The Jazz Cafe".  I feel so fortunate to have attended the Jazz cafe every weekend for over two years. By seeing a different artist every week it exposed me to people who I may have otherwise ignored.  Being a frustrated guitarist I tend to seek out musicians and particularly guitarists and shunned vocalists entirely. Greta, Edmonia Jarrett, Kelly Johnson, and others help me see that a good vocalist is truly a musician as well. In fact the most universal lesson taught by the instructor or mentor is to emulate the human voice. Sometimes the best music lesson can be to put down the instrument and just listen. Greta's has earned the respect of the entire jazz community with her broad range of qualities, from crystal clear, to gritty and soulful. She also approaches her art as a student of jazz and I've heard her announce before a tune that her first verse of scat will come from a particular Ella Fitzgerald recording and the second verse her own improvisation. She is a tribute to the past, the present, and undoubtedly the future of jazz.
