Joe Doria

It was a KPLU Jazz Cruise in the summer of 2000 that I first heard Joe play with Mimi Fox.  As always jazz can surprise you in the most wonderful ways.  The combination of the smooth yet piercing sound of the Hammond B3 organ and Mimi Fox's articulate guitar was beyond words.  It's one of those moments that you wish had been recorded.  They called him "Smokin Joe" at the break and that nickname has stuck for me ever since.
Alas I lost Joe for a long time.  Not because I didn't know where he was playing, but because his regular gig was Wed. nights at 9:30pm with Dan Heck (another great guitarist). Being a working stiff, it was just a little to late on a week day to go out and I never made it to see him.  I was overjoyed to see him with Mimi Fox Dec. 30th 2001 at Jazzbones in Tacoma.  An incredible night of music.  I have been back to Jazzbones every Sunday since to see Joe play with the "Cliff Colon Trio" (Cliff on sax, and John Wicks or Brian Kirk on drums) with a different special guest every week. Remember when your listening to Joe perform that he is also playing the bass lines with his feet. My father played the organ and he would always take his shoes off because you can feel the oversize keyboard type pedals better.  During one of Joe's smokin solos I have to remind myself that his feet are moving as fast as his fingers. An unbelievable talent.
Joe also plays the Sunset Tavern every Monday night.

Raised in the Seattle-Tacoma area, Hammond organist Joe Doria has been making big waves on the NW music scene.

Joe learned from the Hammond greats of past and present with emphasis on his favorite - Jimmy Smith.   It's clear to see that these studies are paying off.

Whether it be jazz, blues, funk, or pop...crowds whoop and hollar along with the incredibly tasty grooves he lays down.  People watch in amazement at his finger and pedal work.  He is obviously at home and in touch with the Hammond.

Joe has played with many jazz greats as well as the best musicians the
NW area has to offer.
You can see Joe Doria with drummer John Wicks every Monday at the "Sunset Tavern" in Ballard and currently every Sunday with saxophonist Cliff Colon at Jazz Bones in Tacoma.
