Urban Oasis "Som
Brasil" |

Biography I first heard part of this group in 1995 at "The Jazz Cafe" performing with Susan Carr. Backing Susan was Kiko de Freitas (guitar), Miguel Garrido (bass), and Scott Ketron (drums). It was about one year later that I saw them after adding Michael Martinez (guitar) and Bryant Urban (saxophone, guitar, and vocals). I remember feeling that it seemed unfair that Kiko, Miguel and Scott were so good, how could this guy Bryant come along and get his name into the band. When they began to play I felt like this guy was way to bubbly and pardon the expression but very "white". After only one song (about 15 mins long) I was sold. Bryant sang (and played sax) with such a devotion to the classic Latin groove being laid down by Kiko and Miguel that he added a spark I could not have dreamed they needed. Also wrong in my first impression was how could you add another guitar to a band that had "the King of guitar" Kiko in it. Michael's guitar style had such a highly polished finish and his versatility took me by surprise. I could not help but feel that Antonio Carlos Jobim was looking down smiling with approval. Keith Church (The JazzDog) Miguel Garrido has moved to California and will be greatly missed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bio to be submitted soon |
