The
JazzDog is a Wire Hair Fox Terrier named Betsy.
Her papers read Itsy Bitsy Betsy Bear. We call her Bear.
How Betsy became "The JazzDog".
There was a Jazz Club in Kent a few years ago called "The Jazz Cafe".
It was a non profit organization run by a wonderful lady named Deanna Reitan.
Only open on Saturday nights, with a non-alcoholic venue.
There was an emphasis on getting high school kids excited about jazz.
The third set was always open-mic and the kids (and some adults as well)
could sit in with some of the greatest talent in Seattle.
We were so taken by the whole idea of the thing that we started showing up early
to help set up the chairs and couches (yes couches) and get the food
ready.
One day we had been out hiking and we didn't have time to drop
Betsy off at home before showing up to setting up.
The band that night was a group I was really looking forward to seeing
and after setting up I again didn't have time to run Betsy home.
We kind of sheepishly sat down in a love seat (6ft from the grand piano)
and just kind of hoped that Deanna wouldn't get mad at us.
Quite the opposite, the musicians made a few nice comments
about how well behaved she was to sit so quite for 4 hours.
We took a chance again the next week and just brought Betsy with us.
The next group was FWM - Frank Seeberger - Wayne Bliss - Mark Yeend.
I give credit to Wayne for dubbing Betsy "The JazzDog"
The name stuck and the JazzDog was born.
We attended "The Jazz Cafe" every Saturday
for over two years with almost perfect attendance.
We made friends with many of the jazz artists that performed.
As the years have rolled on we would occasionally run across
familiar faces in the jazz scene and even though at first they
would not remember us, they always remembered "The JazzDog".
We (and Betsy) long for club that would allow our dog.
